In Plain English: What A Total Is
A total is a bet on how many runs both teams score added together. The sportsbook posts a number. You decide whether the real game finishes above it or below it.
Over means more runs than the number. Under means fewer. If the number is 7 and the final is 4-2, that is six runs and the under wins. If the final is 5-3, that is eight and the over wins.
That is the whole bet. It does not care who wins the game. A team can lose 6-0 and your under 7 still cashes.
What Correlation Means
Two bets are correlated when the same thing in the world makes both of them win or both of them lose. They are not connected by any rule the sportsbook wrote. They are connected by reality.
Some correlations are obvious and real. If you bet a team to win and bet the over in that same game, a nine run outburst by your team helps both tickets. Those two bets are genuinely linked.
The question tonight is a different one. Five unders in five different cities. Are those linked too?
Why Everybody Believes They Are
The story is easy to tell and it sounds right. Temperature, humidity, how the ball is behaving that week, how umpires are calling the zone that month. None of those things stop at one stadium. So a night when runs are hard to come by should be hard everywhere, and five unders should be closer to one bet than five.
Every bettor has lived the version of this that confirms it. The night four unders all cashed. The night the whole board went over and the card was dead by nine o'clock. Those nights are vivid and they get remembered.
What The Season Actually Says
Our sister site ran the numbers on every 2026 regular season game through September 4. That is 2,122 games across 161 dates. The test is simple: if games on the same night moved together, the average runs on a 15 game slate would swing around more than random chance can explain.

Read the last two rows slowly, because they are the whole answer. If the shared night theory were true, that first number would be well above the second. It is four hundredths of a percentage point above it.
The daily share of games finishing under 8.5 has actually bounced around slightly less this season than independent games would. That is what an effect of zero looks like once normal randomness is added in.
Then Why Do Those Nights Feel So Real?
Because they happen. On June 22 twelve games averaged 5.33 combined runs. On April 13 ten games averaged 14.40. Both of those nights are real and both of them are memorable.
The catch is that if you take this whole season, shuffle every game into a random date, and rebuild fake slates out of them, you get nights just as extreme at almost exactly the same rate. Roughly one shuffled season in three looks more clustered than the real one.
So the low scoring nights are not evidence that nights move together. They are evidence that if you deal 151 hands of fifteen games each, some hands come out lopsided. That is what randomness looks like, and human memory is very bad at telling the two apart.
What Does Move Together
Something real does drift, just not on the timescale of a night. Sort the same games by month:

Three quarters of a run between May and June is a large move in baseball terms. Run environment absolutely shifts across a season. It just does not shift on the schedule your betting slip is on.
Tonight's Card, Priced Out
Every price has a win rate attached to it. Hit that rate and you finish level. For a minus price the formula is the price divided by the price plus 100.

Every price tonight is a minus price, so every one of these risks more than it collects. The whole card risks 14.13 units to win 11.5, which needs 55.13 percent to break even.
The Biggest Ticket, In Plain Terms
The largest play is Tigers and Guardians under 7 at -125, for 3 units to win, which risks 3.75.
Cleveland starts Parker Messick, who has a 2.46 ERA over 161.0 innings with a 1.02 WHIP across 27 starts. ERA is runs allowed per nine innings. WHIP is walks and hits per inning, so 1.02 means he puts roughly one man on base an inning, which is very good.
The other half is the Cleveland offense, which scores 4.06 runs a game on a .686 OPS, the lowest of the twelve clubs on this card. A total needs both teams to score. When one of them is the weakest offense on the slate, the under starts ahead.
The argument against is Detroit's starter Framber Valdez, at a 4.36 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. If this loses, the Tigers are the reason.
The One Over
Giants and Mets over 8 is the only over on the card, and the reason is that San Francisco is not really starting a starter. Anthony Molina has 5.0 innings all season and zero starts, with a 5.40 ERA. When a team hands the ball to an arm like that it usually means a bullpen day, which means more pitching changes, more baserunners and more runs. San Francisco also allows 4.71 runs a game, the most of anyone on this card.
The Money, In Plain Numbers
Minus prices here are quoted to win. A 3 unit play at -125 does not put 3 units at risk, it puts 3.75 there to collect 3.

Four wins and two losses tonight is roughly a 1.4 unit profit. Three and three is roughly a 0.6 unit loss.
What To Take Away
Correlation is a real idea and it matters a great deal inside one game. A side and a total on the same game genuinely move together, and books price parlays of those legs accordingly.
Across different games on the same night, on the evidence of 2,122 games, it is close to nothing. Five unders on a Saturday is five bets. If four of them lose tonight, the reason will be four wrong opinions, not one bad night.
That is a better position to be in than the alternative, and it is also a warning. Nobody gets to blame the night.
